Hungry Marylanders Could Lose Access to More Than 113 Million Meals Annually
On any given day, 682,280 Marylanders (more than 220,000 of them children) don't know where their next meal will come from. Now, proposed changes to two critical federal feeding programs detailed in the President's FY19 budget would make that challenge even greater.
The budget proposal calls for slashing nearly one-third of the funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a program that provides a monthly stipend to food-insecure individuals and families. It also would eliminate the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), which we administer to low-income senior citizens under the name My Groceries to Go!
As someone who cares about their hungry neighbors, we're asking you to add your voice to this important conversation by signing this petition supporting SNAP and CSFP.
In Maryland, SNAP not only helps about three-quarters of a million people each month, but it infuses money into our local communities — in 2016 alone, SNAP had a $1.9 billion impact on the state's economy. My Groceries to Go! is another vital program that more than 2,400 Maryland seniors rely on for monthly boxes of shelf-stable food.
If these drastic changes become reality, our hungry neighbors will annually lose access to 100 million meals through SNAP, and more than 750,000 from My Groceries to Go. Hundreds of thousands of food-insecure Marylanders will be forced to turn to other parts of the safety net at a time when hunger-relief groups are already stretched thin.
By adding your name to this petition, Maryland's senators and representatives will know that in our state, we proudly stand up and support our neighbors in need, and we will do everything we can to defend the basic human right of access to food.
